Long Island Business News: Trump, supporters rally for Jones Beach project

From

After dozens of supporters and some critics rallied at Jones Beach regarding a restaurant stalled for five years, Donald Trump briefly walked onto the site where he and entrepreneur Steve Carl want to build the embattled Trump on the Ocean.

Dressed more for the board room than the boardwalk, Trump spoke to a crowd and then stood on the spot where he and Carl, who owns Carlyle on the Green, for five years have been trying to build the waterfront restaurant.

Although Trump said the project would be relatively small compared to many he has done, so far it has stalled.

The site instead of a new venue today is little more than a pile of rubble, scattered weeds, a puddle – along with possibility, proliferating lawsuits and a possibly promising future.

“It would have been up years ago,” Trump said of the project. “When Tiger (Woods) was hot, he was going to have his party at our building after the U.S. Open.”

Instead of a partnership, the project has turned into a sort of tug of war with each side blaming the other. Trump and Carl say they’re ready to finance the project and start building.

“I want government to get out of the way,” said Pat Nicolosi, president of the Elmont East End Civic Association. “We need to build. We have to build on Long Island.”
